#7: Insanity

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
~Albert Einstein

There is a fine line between perseverance and insanity. I believe that perseverance is doing something repeatedly to get a better outcome than the time before. When you are persevering at something, you will still feel positive at the end of working on something, even if you didn't accomplish what you were hoping to. Insanity, therefore, is doing something repeatedly and expecting an entirely different outcome every single time. Here is an example of perseverance vs insanity. I was trying to teach my 6-year-old how to tie his shoes. In the beginning he would just get frustrated and sit on the floor and cry, expecting his problem to be solved. He would do this repeatedly until we just gave up for the moment. That is insanity. Here is where it turned into perseverance. We worked it out by talking about it, about how it was important to keep trying so that one day after a lot of practice he will be able to tie his own shoes. It was at this point, after turning it from a negative to a positive, that it went from insanity to perseverance. Now he can almost tie his shoes on his own, and we got rid of the negativity. That is a good way to be able to tell the difference. How do you feel after repeating something again, even if you weren't successful. Did you feel negative? Or did you feel positive?
